On Monday, James Bobo, Minor M. Shaw, Shammond Omar Williams, and Linda and Steve Owings, as the class of 2025, were inducted into the Phillis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) Hall of Fame.
The room was full of PWCC supporters, staff, participants, and donors. Everyone was a lifelong friend of the center.

Bobo was the publisher and photographer of The Community Informer, the only black-owned print newspaper in Greenville. There is only one other in the state.

Shaw is a business leader of a leading technology company and a philanthropist.

Williams played NBA basketball and coached. The Greenville native was inspired by many local influencers and achieved way beyond his initial dream.

The first couple ever inducted, Linda and Steve Owings. Steve Owings is the founder and chairman/CEO of Scansource, Inc.

All of the inductees have made an impact on the Greenville community and on the progress of the PWCC.

Meredith Walker, chief operating officer of the PWCC, announced the launch of an education scholarship honoring Lela McKnight and Xanthene Norris.

McKnight had been a teacher and guidance counselor in the upstate for decades. She retired as director of guidance counseling of the S. C. Governors School for the Arts and Humanities.

Xanthene Norris, a graduate of Furman University, enjoyed a long career in education, public service, and civil rights. She served on the Greenville County Council for 25 years.

Norris also taught French at Sterling High School and later helped navigate students through integration.

A contestant on The Voice and a Greenville native, Delvin Choice, brought the house down with two songs. Choice was on TV in season 6.

My vision is to write individual biographic sketches of each of the inductees in a series coming soon.
