Discover the myriad urban undercover gardeners in our midst

Gardeners are quick to confess that playing in the dirt can become an abiding lifestyle.

One woman said her grandfather passed it on to her father.  He passed it on to her. And she has passed it on to her 17-year-old son and many others.

Thus, unbeknownst to many, a myriad of gardeners surround us. Test me out. Ask around and see how many people you see daily are incognido gardeners, camouflaged as friends, relatives, and neighbors.

Yes, gardeners say gardening can be a highly habit-forming activity, but in a largely positive way that benefits mental and physical well-being. Many people describe it as a "positive addiction," noting how the routine and rewarding nature of tending to plants can create a compelling cycle.

Adults and children can participate in a gardening program operated by the county of Greenville at the Taylor’s location at 4806 Old Spartanburg Road.

The fee is $60 a year, an unbelievable price considering what is included.  Check their website for details. There are 125 members in 4 locations.

Most of the crops are out of season, but the muscadines are ripe, bursting on the vines.

It amazes me to see how enthralled gardeners are with their craft.  They love the cycle of planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distributing produce to one and all, free for the taking with gratitude.

Eileen Huckabay is a good example. My wife and I chanced upon her in her garden at the Taylor’s Rec Center. She was busy harvesting muscadines from the full vines.

Huckabay at once welcomed us into the inner sanctum of the garden plot. We took pictures of her and the garden, and she turned the tables, taking pictures of us for her website.

That is an important element of gardening: it surely brings folks together into a common bond. Many have, therefore, observed that you meet the finest people in gardening, to say nothing about the freshest, pest-free vegetables, brimming with nutrition.

You can learn more about the county garden project by visiting their plot behind the administrative building at 4806 Old Spartanburg Road in Taylors or checking out their website

Happy gardening.
