Psychologist Jackie Andrade and researchers like Jeffrey Wasmsmes have revealed that doodling and sketching improve memory, focus, and cognitive performance across all ages, from children to older adults. Studies show doodlers recall 29% more information, as sketching helps keep the brain alert and reduces stress.

Thus, sketching can be fun.  And beneficial.

Just ask Ashley, the class instructor’s professional name. She teaches students of all ages.

I was surprised to drop by Greer Harris Teeter and found a class of eager students working on amazing sketches.

I had to check with the manager, Tim Debner, on the business arrangement. Debner chuckled and said the proprietor of their previous location required Ashley to pay for a rental space.

However, Debner takes pride in looking out for the community when he can.  The class meets weekly for an hour and a half at no cost for the use of the space.

This is not a class for beginners, Ashley was quick to point out.

Just look at the details, the contrast, the gradations, and more. I was struck by the accurate proportions, correct perspective, the effective use of line weight, and clear, purposeful composition.

Newbies don’t capture the essence of movement, avoiding subjects that appear stiff and stagnant.

I was particularly struck by the variation in line thickness and darkness, differentiating between edges, depth, and highlights.
