The Greenville Free Medical Clinic is a marvel to behold. More than 4,000 patients are served each year at no cost, says Susie Foley, executive director.
The dire circumstances that drive patients to the clinic tug at your heartstrings, she says.

The very sick often have nowhere else to go. So, they go to 600 Arlington Avenue in Greenville, SC.

According to Foley, patients receive free treatment for diagnostic, primary, specialists, ancillary, dental care, and medications.

Usually, dental care is limited to simple extractions and acute infection.
Dr. Lawson Stoneburner started the Greenville Free Medical Clinic in 1987. In the decades since then, tens of thousands of low-income uninsured patients have received care from volunteer physicians, dentists, and nurses at the four-clinic sites operated by the organization.

Nearly 400 volunteers give of their time and talent each year. Medical experience is not necessary - there are essential volunteer opportunities available in patient registration and screening.

Volunteer dentist Don Ridgell says, "We serve the neediest members of the community here."
One patient reported feeling that she received good quality care at the clinic.

The staff of volunteers beams as they think about their collective mission to provide a medical home for folks who have nowhere else to go.

Dr. Newman says, we care about others and take our time to give back.
Foley says, we depend on the providers for their time and resources. We receive no state and federal funding. Our budget comes from the local community with United Way, various churches, and individual donations, she said.

One patient said the retail cost of her medicine is about $500 a month, given her chronic condition. I could be lost without the clinic, she said.

Foley said many people are really sick but lack a job, money, or insurance.
Because of the economy, she added, there has recently been a 30%, 40%, and 50% increase in patients.
Residents feel that they need to give, say, a dentist.
