Potholes Remain a Blemish for the County

Who wants to be in the shoes of Greenville County Public Works? Surely, they well know about the tragic potholes in the county.  They also well know that the taxpayers have to be ready to foot the bill, either through a penny tax, property tax, or some alternate funding method.

No one can merely wave a magic wand and make the staggering number of potholes disappear. So, county officials and taxpayers need to deliberately work through this knotty problem.

Meanwhile, the road conditions are getting worse daily. Here is the information I found.

  • Pavement condition: 60% of Greenville County's pavement is in poor or fair condition.

  • Pavement rating: 31.7% of pavement is rated fair, 28.7% is rated poor, and 39.6% is rated good.

  • Road

  • Greenville County has a road maintenance fee.

  • Pothole repair: In 2020, SCDOT patched about 679,300 potholes in South Carolina.

  • Pothole damage claims: In 2020, SCDOT paid $627,615 to 3,161 damage claims caused by potholes.

Potholes are caused by a combination of water and traffic. When the pavement and the material beneath it can't support the weight of traffic, potholes form.

Some time ago it was said that $2 billion would solve the problem?

Some 20% of their roads are in poor condition in Simpsonville and Greer, authorities said.  In Travelers Rest 50% are said to be poor.

Many citizens remain confident and hopeful about county road prospects.
