Novant Health breaks ground in Greenville

Updated: Nov 17

Novant Health’s new medical campus will be at the corner of Patewood Drive and Frontage Road, adjacent to Interstate 385 in Greenville.

Novant officials were joined by elected leaders to inaugurate construction of a new 20-bed hospital as part of the health system’s broader expansion into the region.

“This Patewood campus is a big deal, but it’s only the beginning,” said Ryan Lee, president of Novant Health Greenville.

Novant announced plans for the facility in April and was granted a certificate of need by the state Department of Public Health in June.

According to Novant, the facility will be outpatient focused and will include specialty services, operating rooms and diagnostic imaging, with the flexibility to expand based on future demand.

Lee said the medical campus represents Novant’s commitment to expanding health care options in Greenville and across the Upstate. He added the health system aimed to provide exemplary care and was in the process of building a team of talented health professionals to provide that care.

“I also believe that competition in health care is good … it’s essential,” Lee said.

The medical facility will offer the community new value and new choices, said Michael Kissenberth, S.C. physician executive with Novant Health.

Lee and Kissenberth said the health system’s expansion into the Upstate will also give physicians and other medical professionals new career options in a rapidly growing market.

Kissenberth said while Novant may be new to the area, it is not a new company.

The nonprofit health system operates a network of nearly 900 locations, including 19 hospitals, more than 750 physician clinics and urgent care centers, outpatient facilities, and imaging and pharmacy services in both Carolinas.
