Here's how you can keep safe from the heat.

What is a heat wave?

A heat wave is a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days, per the National Weather Service at GSP. They can occur with or without high humidity and have the potential to cover a large area, exposing large populations to hazardous heat.

How can I stay safe from the heat?

Heat waves can be taxing on the body and can lead to heat related illnesses like heat stroke. Doug Outlaw with the National Weather Service at GSP shared the following advice on how residents can protect themselves from the heat.

"Certainly keep hydrated. Drink water and make sure you've got some water available to drink if you're going to be outside in the heat, and if at all possible, take breaks and come into an air conditioned building for a time to cool off,” Outlaw said.

It is also important to check on older, sick, or frail individuals who may need help responding to a heat wave. Never leave children or pets alone in a locked vehicle, for death due to hypothermia can occur. Wearing loose-fitting clothing is recommended during these harsh weather conditions.
