Harris Teeter Fills a Vacuum

We first fell in love with the business model of Harris Teeter when we discovered their store on Augusta Street in Greenville, SC.

We followed with a keen interest in the construction of a second store on Church Street.

We could not believe it when we heard that a third store would be built at 2145 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, SC, very close to our house.

We were on hand for the grand opening on December 12, 2023 for the ribbon cutting and the Taste of Teeter Sample event.

What are the main attractions?

Wide variety of groceries: fresh cooked salmon steak twice a day, cooked lobster on Wednesday, thick-cut steaks on Thursday, and low prices on selected items like oranges.

Also, a hit are the well-lighted wide aisles, the deli, the pizza bar, the wine and beer bar, the rotisserie chicken kiosk, and Starbucks.

We saved $1.00 per gallon during the grand opening because of the fuel perks just for shopping at the new grocery store. The fuel perks continue as a regular saving feature for regular shoppers.

We even found pastry treats from Racine, Wisconsin. That is where Pringles, a Danish treat, is made.

Harris Teeter remained open in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Because many were without power, grocery shoppers flocked there, not only for weekly staples but also for their daily meals and to warm up while charging all manner of their electronic devices — computers, phones, tablets.

We have to congratulate senior management for having a commercial supermarket generator available during Hurricane Helene. What a lifesaver that proved to be for our community.
The Teeter staff was first-class during the disaster. A staffer called Stick even used his personal car battery jump starter to help out an elderly man in the parking lot.
I hate to say that most other grocery stores and major hotels remained closed in the immediate wake of the hurricane. No generators. How baffling is such short-sightedness?
Also, the daily $5 meal deal can be a lifesaver in a pinch for a busy family or a weary worker.
Self-checkout is an option, not a strongly recommended mandate. How seniors enjoy the friendly service at the cash register.
Congratulations on a well-conceived and well-executed grocery store model. Good job.
