Project Highlight: Public Safety Training Center

On February 14, 2025 shovels were turned at the groundbreaking for the new Public Safety Training Center. The new facility will be housed at the former City of Greer Fire Department Training Center on Hood Road. Speakers at the event included City of Greer Police Chief Matt Hamby, Greer Fire Chief Dorian Flowers, Mayor Rick Danner, and city Assistant Administrator Reno Deaton.

The training center is slated to include a 50-yard indoor firing range, a new fire training tower, and seminar classroom space. The center will primarily house training for the city's own fire and police departments but is also designed to accommodate joint training sessions with other municipalities and public safety partners from across the state.

Concrete Pad Pouring and Walls Begin to Go Up - March through May 2025

Contractors poured the concrete pad for the main building at the site on Hood Road beginning in March of 2025. Work continued on filling in the concrete pad into April. As of late May, crews have installed cinder block walls for the firing range, and work has begun on the foundation for the new fire training tower. When it’s finished, this state-of-the-art facility will give Greer Police and Fire the space, tools, and technology to train more effectively.

The Public Safety Training Center is the first of the four “ForGreer” projects to break ground, and it’s on track for completion in March 2026. Here are some drone photos of the recent concrete pad pouring:

Project Highlight: Sports & Events Center

Greer city leaders announced the future home of the sports & events center on August 15, but city staff and paid consultants did a lot of legwork before purchasing the land on S. Highway 14 between Gibb Shoals and S. Buncombe Rd.

The city hired The Sports Facilities Advisory to take a deep dive into Greer’s current recreational needs and determine whether the region could support a new facility designed to host indoor tournaments for teams from across the country. SFA looked at a lot of factors before making a recommendation on the type and scale of facilities the City of Greer should build. They considered sports participation in Greer and the broader region, demographics and income data, existing sports tourism facilities, and more.
