Wren, which won the Class AAA high school boys basketball state championship in 2022-23, put itself in the commanding position of its new home, Region 1-AAAA, with three weeks left in the regular season.

The Hurricanes won Friday night at Westside, 61-56, in a matchup of teams ranked in the top five according to the Upstate Super 25 and also the coaches' association. Wren was ahead by 15 points in the third quarter but let it slip away to nothing, 51-51, with five minutes left.
Pulling out a victory after that near-disaster means Wren (15-3, 4-0) has swept through the leading conference challengers — also Fountain Inn and Laurens — with a two-game lead and a road win against Westside (13-4, 1-2).
