Last week, Limestone President Nathan Copeland told students and staff members that a $6 million shortfall would likely force the university to transition to an all-online model or close altogether.

While the gift from the Fullerton Foundation – a Gaffney-based foundation that invests in education and health care – might not be enough to get the university back on its feet, officials hope it will provide momentum  for Limestone campaign.

The university launched the emergency fundraising campaign on Thursday, hours before the Fullerton gift was made public.

In a prepared statement, Copeland said, “This extraordinary gift from the Fullerton Foundation is a testament to the long-standing partnership between our two institutions and a powerful affirmation of the role Limestone plays in this region.”

Copeland added that a comment that suggests optimism surrounding Limestone’s future prospects: “The  Foundation’s support will have an immediate and lasting impact on  our students, our programs, and our community.”

Limestone opened in 1845 as a college for women.

About 1,000 students currently attend classes on campus. Another 750 take courses online.

The university employs close to 500 faculty and staff members.

Copeland estimates that Limestone has a $150 million local economic impact each year.

“We make this gift in the hopes that Limestone continues to nurture and educate future leaders and continues to be an integral part of the local economy and culture.”

Copeland was unavailable for comment Thursday evening, according to a university spokesman.
