Main Spartanburg Road Closed for a Year, See Why

Cannons Campground Road is closed and likely won't reopen for more than a year; see why

Darryl Mroz says business was down 40 percent last year at his lawn equipment sales and repair shop on Cannons Campground Road.

The reason, he thinks, is straightforward: The bridge over nearby Peter’s Creek has been out since last June, and potential customers either aren’t driving by or don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of lengthy detours to get to his shop.

“There used to be a car going by every five seconds,” said Mroz, owner of Mr. Oz Engine Works. “Now it’s silence.”

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, it could take until spring or summer of 2026 for the road to reopen for through traffic.

DOT Public Involvement Director Ginny Jones said that as crews began repairing the Peter’s Creek bridge, they discovered that the damage to the substructure was more extensive than initially thought. The bridge will need to be replaced entirely.

Cannons Campground is a two-lane highway that serves as a key entry point for the east side of Spartanburg. According to the DOT, more than 8,000 vehicles used the road daily before the bridge closed.

The DOT hosted an information session at Zion Hill Baptist Church on Thursday. About 200 people attended.

David Britt, who represents Spartanburg County Council District 3, attended. “Cannons Campground is a vital conduit – it impacts almost everyone on the east side in some way,” said Britt, whose district covers the eastern portion of the county. “This project needs to be a priority.”

DOT engineer and project manager Michael Pitts said replacing the bridge will require a planning process that includes identifying a contractor, reviewing design proposals, and finalizing contracts. While repairs to the bridge’s foundation are ongoing, Pitts said the replacement will not take place until 2026.

The closure cuts off homes and businesses east of the bridge from easy access to several schools, dozens of stores, and the Mary Black Campus of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

The simplest detour involves Old Converse Road and East Main Street. It isn’t a very direct route, however, said Mroz. “I have to go nine miles round-trip out of my way to get to work now,” he said.

Cheryl Bryant, who lives on Bud Arthur Bridge Road, worries about how the closure might affect someone experiencing a health crisis. “This isn’t about getting to Marshall’s or Hobby Lobby,” she said. “It’s about getting a sick person to the hospital.”
