The late Lonnie McGee will have his name live into perpetuity. How could he have imagined that this honor would be his, even if posthumously.

City Council unanimously approved a resolution renaming the athletic field at Greer City Stadium in honor of community icon Lonnie McGee in recognition of his decades of civic pride, particularly in promoting and supporting Greer High School athletics.

Councilman Karuiam Booker said the renaming was especially poignant in its timing.
McGee was a spectacular individual in our community,” Booker said. “It’s just icing on the cake that we’re able to pull this together in Black History Month to solidify the history,” he said.

For decades McGee led the marching band with aplomb and gusto, directed traffic and addressed crowds of enthusiastic fans during his beloved high school football games.

McGee was the consummate fan of the Yellow Jackets. He was a stadium fixture. Now his enduring furor for his beloved Yellow Jackets will be memorialized by the naming of the stadium after him.
