A reconstructed neighborhood center was named the Mary Duckett Center, as the council unanimously approved the name this week.

The request came from the Community Development Empowerment Team to honor the late activist.

“This dedication reflects our commitment to fostering belonging, uplifting local voices, and ensuring equitable access to services, said Mayor Knox White.

The Mary Francis Duckett Community Development Center on Hampton Avenue will open next month.

Duckett was affectionally called “Mama Duckett” as the president of the Southside Neighborhoods in Action. She was a pivotal figure in the development of Unity Park and a champion of the underserved.

This 85-year-old trailblazer died in November of 2025.
