Flu-related school policies

  • Students with a fever of 100°F or higher, cough, or sore throat should stay home from school until their fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication.

  • Students with diarrhea or vomiting should also stay home from school. 


  • Students should wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. 


  • Students should cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or their sleeve or elbow if a tissue isn't available. 


  • Flu-related precautions. 


  • People at high risk for complications should see a health care provider right away.

  • Early treatment with antiviral medications may help lessen symptoms.



Widespread flu activity and increase in deaths are being reported this week in South Carolina, according to new data from the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

The department puts out a "flu watch" report every week.

 There were 8,806 lab-confirmed tests reported. In the current flu season, there have been 29,947 lab-confirmed tests reported.

  • The report shows increases in confirmed flu tests and hospitalizations.

  • This week, 843 flu-related hospitalizations were reported by 65 hospitals.

  • In the current flu season, 2,945 flu-related hospitalizations were reported.

  • This week, 15 influenza-associated deaths were reported; however, 6 deaths occurred during previous weeks. A majority of those deaths were for people over 65 years old.

  • In the current flu season, there have been 45 influenza-associated deaths.

  • 22 of those deaths were in the Upstate, 9 in the Midlands, 8 in the Pee Dee, and 6 in the Lowcountry.
